The geography of ancient Greece was scattered and due to the many islands of the country different city-states formed. These city-states competed against one another, as opposed to the entire empire working together.
The Geography is not like any of the other civilizations we have talked about. The mountains and the water ways around them. The bodies of water helped in the trade effort. The Mediterranean Sea helped them connect to the other civilizations.
The Greeks had limited space to develop agriculture, so they settled in many different areas around the Greek peninsula. The fact that their civilization was divided by their geography encouraged the development of city-states rather than a united civilization under a central government.
